Kinja'd!!!

I have an older iPod that I keep in my van. It connects to an older Pioneer stereo which I can use to control the iPod. Anyway, I need to update the music on the iPod because it hasn’t been done in ages, but Apple, in its infinite wisdom, has set it up so that I have to erase the contents of the iPod to sync the new music. Thanks Apple. There is stuff on the iPod that I don’t have originals of any more and that I don’t want to lose.

Many years ago, I used some downloadable software (I think it was called PodUtil or something) that allowed me to transfer the contents of the iPod to my computer. That old software is long dead, and everything I’ve found since has been crapware.

Does anybody have any suggestions for software that I can use to transfer music from a click-wheel iPod to my computer? Oh yeah, I’m on an older iMac (10.11.6) . Do you sense a theme here?

Thanks in advance, because I’m going to bed.

Sorry no idea. In the Windows world you used to be able to access them just as a mass storage device, letting you pull stuff off without any special software, but I don’t even know if that is true there anymore. It’s probably been nearly a decade since I used an iPod.

Instead of syncing, can’t you manually update your iPod with individual songs you want on there ?

It’s still true

Try one of these options. The first one is apparently available, but it might take some legwork to find the key.

Naw, Apple doesn’t let you do that; to add anything at all, it forces you to delete all unrecognized files from the iPod at the same time. It’s both a way to simplify the UX and it makes casual piracy a lot harder

I’ve got one (well, several) old iPods myself, but I haven’t had to do this in a long time either so I’m not sure what the story is these days . I could probably spend a little time this weekend researching/seeing what I can pull off using my knowledge of the command line.

As for software to get the music off, i don’t know any and the old ones don’t work anymore.

On the other hand if you just want music on the iPod, just drag and drop the songs you want, that’s what I’m doing with my old iPod and iTunes has never asked to erase it

Do a google search for “update sync ipod without erasing”

This should pop up,

When I had an iPod, I was able to make my computer see it as an external HD and then manually pull all the files off of it and save them.

See if this works:  https://electronics.howstuffworks.com/how-to-tech/how-to-transfer-songs-from-ipod-to-computer2.htm

Yeah, that’s the way these things should work. But not in the Land of Apple.

We’ll see if others can suggest something. Please don’t spend any time on this, unless you’re curious yourself.

Well, this seems to have killed my iPod. Not that I blame you, of course. I followed the instructions, and now the iPod won’t turn on any more. Fuck.

I use similar vintage equipment and have been there, and probably have to do it again soon...

I bought something from Stacksocial.com but I can’t remember the name of it. I'll check when I get home from work.

Thanks. It looks like I killed the iPod when I tried to put it into disk mode. No time to fiddle with it now, but I’ve probably now lost the music I was trying to save. Oh well.  My brother is going to send me our dad’s old click wheel iPod. Hopefully that will do the trick.

Let me know if you need any help recovering that data or doing any upgrades on that iPod. I’ve been tweaking the internals on these things for years and have done all sorts of repairs including battery replacement,  data recovery, HD replacement as well as swapping to solid state storage (usually CF cards).

Thanks. I’m going to see if the one my brother is sending me will work. No reason to think it won’t. I think my error here was trying to enable Disk Mode. As soon as I applied that change, the iPod ejected itself and never came back. Well, I can start it in Disk Mode using a front button press combination, but it just says, “Okay to disconnect.” I can’t get it to boot normally. I would bet that the disk has been corrupted.

There are only a handful of albums that I need to recover, mostly Steely Dan and Donald Fagen stuff that I could buy, but I’d rather not. Sorry, RIAA. Still waiting to see if I can get those from the original source.

I used this when my laptop took a crap on me, and all 3,000 of my songs were only on my phone. If you have a student email, the cost gets discounted. But worth the price regardless.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I think I bricked my iPod by trying to pit it in Disk Mode. It won’t start up any more.

Yup. My brother is going to send me our dad’s old iPod, though. Fingers crossed it still works.
